A thoracic vertebral localization of a metastasized cutaneous Merkel cell carcinoma: Case report and review of literature
2017
Background: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare neuroendocrine skin tumor, which may be related to sun exposure. It can metastasize to lungs, liver and bone, leading to severe morbidity and mortality. Vertebral metastases from MCC are rare. The authors report the tenth case in the literature, a 59-year-old patient with MCC, which was primarily localized in the scalp, and later provoked distant metastasis to the thoracic spinal column. Case Description: A 59-year-old woman was admitted at our Unit of Neurosurgery with a 4-month history of progressive and severe dorsal back pain, without neurological signs. The patient had been surgically treated for a recidivated MCC in the occipital regio…
Microwave-induced thermoablation with Amica-probe is a safe and reproducible method to treat solid renal masses: results from a phase I study.
2012
Microwave thermal ablation (MWTA) could be considered in the future for treating small solid renal masses. The aim of the present study was to determine both the tolerability of the new Amica-probe applicator-induced MWTA used in vivo on patients with solid renal masses and the effects of heating on renal tumors and normal renal parenchyma. Fourteen patients with renal masses eligible for open radical nephrectomy were enrolled in this phase I study. All patients underwent MWTA of renal masses during the open surgery procedure before clamping of renal vascular pedicle. The effects of MWTA on patients' coagulation and tumor/renal vasculature were investigated. The histological effects of MWTA…
Laparoscopic Microwave Thermal Ablation for the Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Chronic Hepatic Patients
2020
Background: Laparoscopic microwave thermal ablation (LMWTA) is a well-established alternative treatment to liver resection for treatment of liver tumors. The aim of this study was to describe our experience in LMWTA for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in chronic hepatic patients. Materials and Methods: A study group of 61 consecutive HCC patients treated with LMWTA from January, 2013 to May, 2020 were considered for this study. Patient characteristics, liver function test, operational characteristics, and complications were recorded. Results: Of the 61 patients who underwent LMWTA, median age was 64 (interquartile range [IQR]: 58-71) years, mean body mass index was 26.2 (IQR: 23.2-29.4); 44 …
La termoablazione nel trattamento delle neoplasie epatiche primitive e secondarie
2004
Radiofrequency thermoablation is a locoregional procedure based on the use of electromagnetic waves that induce movement and consequently the production of heat. This is the basis for the coagulative necrosis produced in the tissues. The method, experimented with and developed in the '90s, is today extensively used in the treatment of focal hepatic lesions, both primary and secondary. The factors that condition the procedure are related essentially to the characteristics of the tumours and to the possibility of obtaining a predictable area of necrosis that guarantees the radicality of the treatment. As regards primary neoplasms, it should be stressed that the treatment for hepatocellular ca…
